About Me

My photo
When i left school back then i was lucky enough to enroll on an engineering apprenticeship. I think this lead me in good stead. I was always one of those children that pulled things apart but actually put them back together again. My first engine given to me at the age of Seven, a Triang Princess Elizabeth. The rest as they say is History. Later in life i got back in to Model Railways and started building Pine Road. This could lead anywhere so i hope you enjoy my Blog.

Guttering issues

Guttering,
Always had a problem with guttering apart from the wrong type of leaves that always seem to get stuck in them.
Glueing them to the brickwork or to the bottom side of your roof  to me just doesn't look right.

"there has to be a better way"
There is,
 "Colin's guttering solution"

Lets have a look at this then. Take your roof and a sheet of paper and draw around your roof.

This bit is important.
Go and make a cup of tea.
Respect the roofing trade.

Time to cut your guttering, now i use 2mm half round Evergreen strip.
The rivet counting brigade have just gasped there last breath! that's a whole 6inches, yes, it is but at least with this you can see it!
Obviously you need to cut it slightly bigger than the square/rectangle you have just drawn.

Now mark on your square/rectangle that you lovingly drew where you want your guttering brackets to go. All will make sense in the next photo.

twist wire around the guttering , don't forget to go around twice
Important

Line up the wire brackets with your marks on the square/rectangle that you drew earlier

And glue in place. I have mentioned it before on here the glue i use is IC-2000 available from Here It's a toughened rubber solution that will stick practically anything.

Now for the clever bit.
I cut four strips of Evergreen 0.75x2.5mm
to fit just inside your square/rectangle, the same one you drew earlier, yes, that one.
These are your eves/bargeboards.
Drill holes through the strip just big enough to take the wire that you have used.
Remember, you marked on your square/rectangle where you wanted your brackets to go, well drill the holes in the same place along the centre line.
As you can see in the photo below snip off the top part of the wire but don't cut both wires. You can guess what will happen, hence importance of going round twice.

You get the idea. Ok, the barge boards don't quite join up but this was a first attempt. Looks pretty dam effective to me.

Below is the finished guttering.
I have never seen this idea done before so can i claim the idea,
Yes you can.
Two advantages to this. You can make up the guttering as a separate item none of that faffing about trying to get things lined up
And no messing around trying to fit to walls or roof.
glue the whole thing to the underside of your roof and glue the whole lot to your building.
Make sure you put it the right way up!

I shall post pictures tomorrow what this is for
so watch out for part 2.
