About Me

My photo
When i left school back then i was lucky enough to enroll on an engineering apprenticeship. I think this lead me in good stead. I was always one of those children that pulled things apart but actually put them back together again. My first engine given to me at the age of Seven, a Triang Princess Elizabeth. The rest as they say is History. Later in life i got back in to Model Railways and started building Pine Road. This could lead anywhere so i hope you enjoy my Blog.

Hornby Class 56 R2645x in BR Rail Blue.

A Hornby Class 56 R2645x in British rail blue (or is it?).

I have had this for some years so, today decided to get her out from her box and tinker, like one does.

Well, it wasn't to be quite that easy, she had seized solid. All the grease had dried out and resembled something like chalk. Stripping her to bits and a good clean up she now runs. I can not get her to crawl, on step 1 she's off. I have tried changing some of the CVs but that just resulted her to stutter. Setting CV8 to 8 has put her back to her factory settings, we are back to her taking off like a Greyhound on heat.

Lets bare in mind that she has not been out of the box for years and is basically a brand new loco. Lets see how she runs on good old DC, i took the decoder out and replaced it with a blanking plug. She hummed and whined, the knob on 3 before any movement was had.

I'll let her run in for a bit, both forward and reverse, this motor is getting very warm! Removing the motor, everything was running very freely as it should.

I was aware that Hornby Class 56 had problems. It was suggested to remove the rubber band that drives the roof fans, improved things slightly. Another suggestion was to remove the Capacitors on the PCB, another slight improvement but still what i would like.

Ok, i bit the bullet and put the sound decoder back in, she runs like a dream.

The myth that "if it wont run on DC, it ain't goin to run on DCC" is not always the case.

Remember i said she was bought new. There seems to be a few discrepancies here.

56 013 yes that's right, the 'skirts' on the lower buffer beam corners are different than on the actual model. You will also notice that it should have round buffers as depicted in the picture.

 Nothing about sound fitted ?
Hornby Class 56 R2645x in BR rail Blue with ESU Locksound 3.5v Sound decoder
It would seem that this one may be a 'Heinz 57'  Well, perhaps not 57 varieties but at least 3 that i can tell. part Romanian, part Donnington and part, i can't remember the Third place they were built. Your comments please.

Buffers i can replace but the corner wraparound part may be a problem as its part of the chassis. There are probably some other detail differences that i have yet to notice.

Not to be put off to much by all of this from Hornby, Grrrrrr! and of course, no chance in sending her back now, oh yes, while i think about it, the lights don't work either, even after playing around with those stupid brass tags that Hornby insisted on using, even hardwiring the dam things in and 'NOTHING' Grrrrrr.

Rant over.

She was far to shiny so after a bit of weathering, adding the air pipes, i think she looks the part.

New passenger for your layout

The other night, i was trolling through eBay looking for some of those cheap figures for my Thumper Class 205 and my Class 121 DMU  both from Bachmann when i stumbled across these new figures from Miniatures by Design.

If you are doing a Modern image layout then these are for you. Starting from £1.99 each, unpainted, they have a superb amount of detail. Measuring at around a scale 5' 9" for the Females and 6'2" for the males, from my point of view, a shade on the tall side. I think there are close to 100 figures that can be bought and the are also available in 0 gauge. I would prefer a few good quality ones rather than a load of cheap figures they are not a bad price. The seller goes by the name of 'pmmstudio' his link is below.

I would like to point out that i have no connection with them at all, i just found them rather good. I would also like to comment on the very quick service as i ordered them at 1:15pm on a Wednesday and they arrived, through the post at 9:30 the following morning.

Not that my photography skills are great but you get the idea. There are a lot of far better photographs on his website.

Bachmann 121'Bubble car'

What a superb model the Bachmann 121 DMU is.
Well, you knew it wouldn't be long.
I have added all the buffer beam pipe work and done away with those couplings. Yes, its been weathered as well.

We will fit a driver and some passengers when i 'chip' it.
What a lovely little project for an afternoon, without all the fuss of cutting, sawing, scratching, filling, trying to make things fit and it runs.
Job done.

Strange goings on

Its been a strange week, think i might go back to work for a rest.
Three bags of rubbish cleared from the spare room ( i know i will regret this at some point) i have probably thrown away something that i shouldn't have. We have, repainted the spare room. Made two display, wall mounted cases, sorted the loft, painted the skirting boards in the lounge ready for a new carpet. Basically been humping furniture around the place.
As yesterday's post revealled, i no longer have a usable 'home' layout. I expect that at the moment, a lot of us are wondering what the future holds regarding exhibitions etc.
We now of course have Youtube, Zoom, whatsapp, Blogger and good old skype to share our modelling skills with each other, not forgetting of course the still popular magazines that are still out there. Will it ever be the same? Lets not forget that most exhibitions are held in school halls, will they still allow us to use them? A lot of questions at the momment.
We had a few hours out playing with Parkstone Goods, strange goings on there as well
And
If anyone is in the same situation as me and is in the process of planning a new layout, what is one to do?
Lets think about this, it takes a lot of effort to move everthing to an exhibition. It starts a few days before an event and probably a few days after putting things away again, making sure everything works, gathering stock, tools, what to take etc.
Building a new layout? Yes i am but no time scales, no cameo compititions, no deadlines or "can you have it ready for November"!!!

It will be operated from the front, i like the idea, more interaction from the viewing public (should that still be the case) also better for home use. Its going to be a few years before i have a layout suitable for an exhibition.
A time to reflect, after all its a hobby and was beginning to wonder if it was becoming an obsession. Leaving that aside, its something that i enjoy doing and will continue to do so but perhaps at a more steady pace ( one engine re-chassied and motored in a week, three kit built engines in the last four months) is going some.
I have met many people and some have become very good friends, encourged me along the way for wich i will always be gratefull.
Hopefully we will see and meet up again very soon.
Colin.

Sorting stuff out

Its been an eventfull few days. I said i needed to sort stuff out well, progress has been made.
All repainted and ready to start again.
I've gone from Pine Road (sold) to Parkstone Goods (packed up) to Exton Quay (sold) What do i have to run things on, yes, a 3ft test track.
Had a bit of a pick me up today and bought a bubble car.
I expect by the end of the week the couplings will have gone, buffer beam detail added, a driver and some passengers. It may even get weathered.

Adams 'Pull-Push' 02

Thanks must be given to a very good friend of mine, this would'nt have happened without him, you know who you are.
He did'nt need some of the parts off of one of Kernow's 02s, so i was able to build a good representation of 225, one of the 02s used on the Seaton branch from 1933.
The pipe work is soul distroying but we got there. This one will be weathered but am pleased with how it turned out.
Come on Kernow, produce some more SR ones in Dark Olive Green.
When we get the Gate Stock built, another short train for a future layout.

Its time to get this sorted

Had enough, the state of my Railway Room.
The clean up has begun. There is a big hole where Exton Quay.

00 Works Class '0330' SR 0-6-0 lined Green

Improving the running qualities of the 00 Works 0330 class.

From building my first loco kit some 9 years ago and now on number 14, you tend to set yourself some sort of  'standard' as to how you think things ought to run and look. Don't get me wrong, i'm no rivet counter but if you are going to build yourself an engine then it really should run well, if its a shunting engine then its not a lot of point having the thing running at 90 mph but flatly refuses to crawl along a length of track.

Back in February when  00 Works  announced that they were to release a Southern Class '0330' i couldn't resist, not quite right for my area but definitely fits in with my era. The old saying came in to play ' well its my layout' After a quick phone call to 00 works, the order was placed for a lined green, Black liveried one. Then a case of sitting back and eagerly awaiting its arrival.

Here you will find a link to a previous post i wrote of the exciting day of its arrival. you may want to click over, have a quick read and return here.

It's a cracking little model, rather expensive but hey, where am i going to find another. I believe some years ago 'Chivers' produced a kit for one but the chances of finding one now is probably going to be virtually impossible, and again what it cost to build the thing.

After reading through 00 Works website it's all handbuilt, screwed together a coreless motor and a one stage gearbox. Now, lets just read that last bit through again.

"A CORELESS MOTOR and a STAGE 1 GEARBOX

Remember what i was saying earlier about how you tend to set yourself standards about how you expect a loco to perform. Time for a rant, Somebody please tell me what all the fuss is about, with coreless motors, i just don't get it, rant over. Getting back on topic, a stage 1 gearbox. Alarm bells sort of rang or at least tinkled in ones head " not sure how this is going to run"

Bearing in mind that the loco arrived on the Thursday morning, a small running session that afternoon and by Friday afternoon its in bits. I can hear you all shouting at me saying "What the hell are you doing, just payed close to 300 quid for a loco and you've pulled it to bits, are you mad ?"

Yes, probably. Well, it didn't meet my running standards did it, as i say, whats the point of having a shunting engine that doesn't shunt. Now we are getting to the nitty gritty of what the post is supposed to be all about, that's if any of you are still reading this???

The massively big question was. Could i possibly fit a Highlevel Gearbox and Mashima motor in this loco?

00 Works '0330' class
I have to say, that's looking promising.

With the chassis removed from its body and one frame removed to use as a template..........

00 Works chassis '0330' class

..........i cut Two pieces of 0.40mm Nickel silver sheet  and temporarily soldered them together and then screwed these to one of the original frames. The problem here or should i say "the reason for making new frames" The chassis is to narrow to accept the Highlevel Gearbox, the original frames are also to thick to widen them out, you loose all your 'side play' that's if there was anything left to use, hence the reason for new side frames.'0330' class 00 works

The Chassis, well at least one side of it, still screwed to the new frames after cutting them out. Using the rear axle hole to find the centre, i didn't trust the other Two holes but used the Connecting rods to set up and mark/centre punch and drill the other Two. I also elongated the centre axle hole just by a couple of thou with a length of sprung wire resting on the top of the axle to act as some sort of 'compensation' this keeps the centre axle firmly on the track.00 works 0330 class

Cutting out some new spacers at 11.5mm wide and soldering the whole thing together, we have a new chassis...... 00 Works 0330 class

......with wheels, motor and gearbox fitted, this is what we have.

Turning our attention as to how this was to fit inside the small body. The body is Two halves, this is going to present us with a problem as will become apparent later.00 Works 0330 class SR LSWR

There is quite a decent size of 'hole' for the motor and gearbox to fit up through.

Only a small amount of material has to be removed from the underside of the cab floor to get it up inside. we also had to remove a portion of the 4 small tabs, Two at each end as the chassis is wider they are in the way.00 Works 0330 class SR LSWR

Chassis all primed and painted matt Black.
00 Works 0330 0-6-0
It all fits, i placed a couple of sticky pads under the motor for it to have something to sit on, also one under the saddleback, all this helps to 'clamp' the motor in place. also a good time to fit a couple of crew.
As you can see in the Photograph, there are Two holes left and right, this is the problem i hinted at earlier, they are for the Two screws to go through to hold the top saddleback and cab roof and rear section on. Obviously, we have a problem as the right hand one, the gearbox is in the way and the left hand side, the front axle is in the way.
My solution was to solder in Two captive nuts and use Two 12BA screws, down through the top of the saddleback. I know this is not ideal and may revisit this arrangement in due course, having Two screw heads on top of the saddleback is not ideal, i have countersunk them and fixed two blanking plugs so its not to conspicuous.
That's it. she is all back together and running beautiful. Complete with a crew and Sprat & Winkle couplings, she is ready for work.
She pulled her first train this friday so it was exactly a week for her to be re-chassis.
00 Works 0330 Exton Quay
Some may say i was mad but me being me, whats the point of having something that your not entirely happy with. I could have just sent her back but this has nothing to do with 00 Works, there quality of engineering or production methods, its a perfectly fine model. This is no different than upgrading any Bachmann or Hornby model. This is entirely me and my own ideas and standards that suit me. i have to say, i rather enjoyed the build.

Do you want to see a video? ok, go on then.

A taster

Just a taster for tomorrow's Blog.
What has he been up to now? This will be published at 7.00pm 8/08/20.
Could be a long one so, i would sit down with a cup of tea.
